Crop the pictures to have a smaller background.

Use a series of geometric shapes with different values to be lighter behind
dark areas and darker around light areas in the portraits.

Paint a background color and stencil off the portrait. Add sponge texture to
the background with two contrasting colors. This could be regulated by you
with only certain pre mixed colors.
