I do this silly thing with my elementary kids (K through 5). I've
trained them so that when they see me put my finger to my lips, they "freeze
like a statue in The Metropolitan Museum of Art." The first one to see me
signal makes the craziest statue possible so that the student next to them
sees it and immediately freezes too. Within a minute, the whole room is
quiet and I can talk, pass on directions, ask for a more reasonable noise
level, etc. The rule is that they can't "unfreeze" until I say so. Just
don't forget to tell them to unfreeze! Hope this helps.
