I would assume that recess refers to elementary school. I teach studio art
in a high school with many students who don't have great regard for learning
or authority. For the most part a call home does wonders for a child's
discipline. However, just today, about an hour after a call was made to a
parent, the parent shows up and asks for a meeting in the guidance
counselor's office with the parent, child and me. The boy lied and said I
pick on him and the parent "did not" back me up. I left school feeling
really crummy. But usually it does the trick. I'm sometimes fearful that
the kids get disciplined physically. Once a student told me his dad smacked
him. At my own teenager's school the students wouldn't dare be disrespectful
to a teacher. Any ideas from teachers who teach in more difficult
environments? Thanks in advance. .....This was a timely question with what
happened today. Thanks. Eileen
