Standards for Honors Classes

Here are the standards by which honors classes are developed at my
school. Jackie and some others were interested in them. Below is the
entire document.

                        HONORS COURSE STANDARDS

All honors courses will show evidence of _all_ standards, though all
honors courses may not emphasize all standards equally. This
flexibility will allow all departments to design courses that could
qualify for honors designation.

All honors courses will

* emphasize higher order thinking skills including synthesis, analysis,
and evaluation

* promote and develop students' independent learning, self-motivation,
and self-evaluation

* expect students to do research, outside reading, and/or applications
in the content area

* require students to use both written and oral communication

* utilize materials which are at or above grade level

* provide complex, multifaceted, or open-ended problem-solving tasks

* have students apply skills in a realistic collegiate or vocational
environment

* employ rigorous assessment practices
