Re: Unruly Class

I must vent! Today I had a 5th grade class come in this
morning after taking the Iowa test. We had started a
water color wash painting and I was going to continue it
and finish it during class. Well.... they wouldn't stop
talking, even after I did all the tricks that usually
calm a class down. So being the Art Nazi that I am, I
collected all the supplies for the watercolor project. We
were going to go back to their classroom and write sentences,
"I will be quiet coming into art" 50 times. Their classroom
teacher told me we couldn't use her room as this was her
planning time and her room and I have to use my own room.
This she said in front of the children to me!! I lost my
leverage just then. I figured if they lost the use of the
art room and had to go back to their desks they would
quiet down. Well.. back we go to the art room to write
sentences and they were talking while writing the sentences.
Some kids did not do them at all so I am making them stay
in during recess to finish next week. I am at this school
Mondays and Tuesdays. I reported the incident to the
principal and she talked to them about disrespect in the
art class. What are some things that you do when a class
comes in noisy, loud, and you can't even start a class??
Besides writing sentences and taking away their art class
what else can you do? I hate to punish the whole class as
some were quiet but it was hard to pick out the trouble
makers.
