I believe, speaking only for myself, that when I disallow certian symbols to
be used (aka hearts, rainbows, etc) it is because it is out of context with
what the lesson is. When students are given free drawing time, I never tell
them what they have to do. (last week for free draw my entire first grade
class made valentines!...) I ask certian things of them...but A. would
never tell them to do artwork with someone else's symbols (aka native
american symbols or hieroglyphs) B. have allowed "hearts and rainbows" when
it was appropriate.
Flexibility it the key in the art room. The students have to feel they own
the art. If you can get them to that point, then they will learn to keep
thinking and come up with new problemsolving with regards to their artwork.
If they feel free enough to create, you can avoid the "schema" trap! lololol
