Our new principal "discovered" that I have been using hand tools in my
elementary art classes for various building aspects of the fine arts. These
activities are used in 5th and 6th grades... sawing and nailing wood. She was
distressed enough to call me at home about it to find out if I was aware of
the implications. I feel that with proper training, supervision and safety
measures in place ten and eleven year olds can successfully use these hand
tools. The hammers are tack and small claw and the saws are coping saws. The
students enjoy the activities and appreciate using tools. We have had no
accidents, not even a minor cut. I seek the various opinions of experienced
educators... wondering if, indeed, I am getting ahead of age appropriate
activities.
