I've had a chance to see two fairly new videos this evening. Again, I'm
offering only my humble opinions so please read it in the spirit it is
given. One is...
"Oaxacan Woodcarving: Innovation Meets Tradition"
This video is from CRIZMAC. It features Zeny Fuentes selecting wood,
carving, and painting a piece of sculpture. For $39.95, a 10 min. video is
rather steep...but still it's worth it's price in my estimation. I teach
mid. school but it's great for K-12. Not many of them are. Short but
entirely about the Oaxacan woodcarving methods and painting methods of this
art. Not boring at all... probably because it's so short. I recommend it
with an A+.
"Tessellations...How to Create Them" from Crystal Videos. This one is
longer...26:49 mins. It's a good primer for art teachers who don't know much
about how tessellations are made. He discusses slide, rotation and
reflection methods but leaves out the 1/2 flip method. There is very little
about the history of tessellations (almost non-existent) and NOTHING about
the creativity of discovering what lies in the form to be tessellated
unfortunately. If you don't know how to explain it to your students, this
would be a good start...but if you do know how, I'd pass on this one. For
me, I'd rate it a B- (only because it explains the 3 methods well).
Toodles......
