The sculpture garden took 4 years to finally take off. Keep on plugging. It
took a change in principalship to get to this point. I have written grant
after grant..rejection after rejection but I feel a passion for it. Keep it
alive...somewhere somehow...someone with some power will see an opportunity
and go for it. Try not to cling to it...Challenge administrators for
specific help in specific areas and help them see all the benefits. I added
a small performing area that can double as an open classroom space..all this
helps people see how it can benefit themselves.
Our mowing will be kept at a minimum too...so we are spending big dollars
on crushed granite for walkways instead of pea gravel etc. I guess weeds
don't grow through that. The sprinkler system was installed today. YA WHO!
This year we are creating two concrete sculptures out of chicken wire and
concrete. I teach 5th and 6th grade. So everyone helps a little bit.
Designs need to be solid..and something that doesn't appeal to climbers..and
of course something that can be taken out of your classroom door. We have
plans for two more next year. I think I would like them to be more abstract,
bolted and constructed ... or create something similar to the wonderful
panty hose theme that has been flowing the artsednet.
As far as the mosaics...I talked to some scouts that were looking for an
Eagle Project. They do the muscle by pouring the concrete and installation .
You are to let them supervise the other boys...You really have to instruct
the Scout well and trust their leadership. Pick your scout well. They also
cannot come up with the funds...You must supply the funds...Sometimes the
scout can actively find solutions to cut costs for you.
Good Luck
Laurie
