First of all, the girl should not be embarrassed; this is a part of her
religion and culture, both of which are millennia old.

My wife, from her time teaching in Turkey, does remember this about the
Muslims, and that it entails not only the human face, but the entire human
body. She cannot remember whether or not it also extends to animals, but
most of their art focuses extensively on flowers, vines, etc.

My wife also suggested that you write to the girl's parents, explaining the
assignment and demonstrating an understanding and appreciation for their
beliefs. Ask _them_ what they think an appropriate motif would be for the
girl to use. If you're working in ceramics, decorated ceramic tiles from
that area of the world are priceless, amazingly beautiful, and used
    everywhere.

    Good luck,
    Larry
