What would you use to put a "finish" on an oil painting? I have a student
who has done a wonderful portrait, oil on masonite, he bought some stuff
that has to be heated in a double boiler. Is there anything more convenient?

    Barbara....

Oil paint when "dry to touch" may have a temporary coating of "retouch
varnish" put over it for some protection and shine that unifies the picture,
however...while it may be dry to touch...the painting is not dry CHEMICALLY
    for 4-6 months.

At that time....a small bottle of Damar Varnish can be purchased for under
$5....and with a flat brush applied.

There are now also some polyurethane based sprays that have been made with
Damar resins that are considered quite good. They are not time tested of
course....again though, I would advise the wait to chemically dry regardless
of what is used, or serious cracking can occur of the paint. Sounds like
the bring to boil method is one of many traditional methods from an artists
handbook, but certainly not necessary these days.
