Interesting remarks that I would have subscribed to a year and a half ago
when I entered the profession. Indeed, the wage structure does not attract
professional men, and most of my hard working bosses and colleagues are
women. The nine month gig is now a sticking point after enjoying my 2.5 month
summer respite from students. I had the luxury of recharging my aging
batteries, painting my house and finishing 5 medium sized sculptures in the
studio. The dated approach (agrarian/industrial model) might use some
massaging and we manage to be dedicated and paid modestly regardless of sex,
but students are being educated sans benefit of strong informed leadership at
board levels. While this indictment is not universal, political interest in
"reforming and improving" our schools recognizes a general problem, maybe
endemic, maybe perceptual. Just as I learn everyday at school, questions
continue to unfold. This list is one forum that informs and amuses... maybe
no definitive answers, but unwavering support. Peter
