Dear Janet and Artsnetters:
I have also done plaster casting with shells by pressing the shells
into a layer of modelling clay which has been pressed into whatever form is
available--styrofoam trays, milk cartons, lids of oats cylinders.... Be
careful of the type of clay, however. Some brands are really sticky and
hard to pull freely from the plaster. Experiment first. You can also press
the shells directly into a thick styrofaom tray but the relief depth is
shallow
(bas relief.)
At the Columbus Museum of Art there is a wonderful painting by
Belgian artist James Ensor of shells and other exotic sea life. I have
used it often for shell lesson theme inspiration. If you would like to
know title, please reply. Ann-on-y-mouse in Columbus
|How about sand casting? Put sand in a shallow tray. Wet it and press the
|shell into the sand. Remove shell and pour plaster into the depression.
|I've done this with preschoolers. and they turn out pretty good. You could
|also draw them llike O'Keeffe did. Janet
