    Wendy,
We have character education at our school on a daily, even hourly basis,
    it's called a Christian school.
It's in the curriculum of every subject, and hopefully ,
the conviction of every heart. Since we are a "missionary" school (
    evangelizing)
we have students of different faiths and no faith or agnostic.
I feel we are successful with all the students because of the love and concern
they feel from the staff and administration. We "win" them over with love and
only then do they listen to the messages of characteter building and
direction that are offered. We earn their respect when they see us living out
    those same convictions
in every part of our life, on campus and off.
Have you read, Neil Postman's " End of Education"? It's a very thought
    provolking
book on the concept of the necessity of "gods" in our life. We all have them,
and we all serve them.....some fail and some bring success. It reminded me of
Bob Dylan's song " You Gotta Serve Somebody". But Postman is a bit broader in
his interpretation. He states that the current crisis in our educational
system is derived from a failure to supply students with a "narritive" like
    those that inspired
earlier generations. Instead, today's schools promote the false "gods" of
    economic
utility, consumerism, technology or ethnic seperatism and resentment.
He tries to present the need to instill a sense of global citizenship,
healthy intellectual skepticism, respect for America's traditions and an
    appreciation
for it's diversity. It's a common sense approach to restoring healthy
    character
    back into the educational system.
It definitly gave me alot to think about and alot I had to impliment into my
    teaching
to raise up a generation of thinkers and not just rebels who detest being
told how to live by a bunch of "know-it-alls".
