I teach elementary art. For a number of years, I used small plastic cups
with lids--that I purchased from Triarco. They are very reasonable. I
put these in mufffin pans. I had five tables of students--and I would
prepare two or three pans of paint for each table. At the end of the
day, I would cover all the cups--or have the last class do so. I Usually
used ice cream lids for palettes--which would have to be washed. The
paint cups can be thrown away eventually--or, if you're really anal, like
me, you can let the paint get dry, then tap out the dry paint against the
    wastebasket, and reuse them.

This year I tried something different, after getting the idea from a
fellow teacher. I am fortunate to have a supply of old cafeteria lunch
trays. I use one lunch tray per table (still 5 tables). I put a layer
or two of either newspaper or the glossy inserts on the trays--then
squeeze a moderate amount of tempera paint on the trays. On each end of
the tray I put the three primaries, then put white and black in the
center (so all the students can reach the colors). I have them use
magazine pages as palettes.Great use for the bezillion magazines that
have been donated. Cleanup is a breeze--they throw away their
"palettes"-- we continue to add more paint to the large trays as
needed--when they get grungy, we just throw the paper away and start
over. Generally, not until the next day. I used this for grades 1-4, and
it worked GREAT--I didn't go beserk when a container of white or yellow
paint got sullied--didn't have to worry about putting lids on containers,
etc. I had to watch students in the final classes, so there wouldn't be
too much extra paint on the trays--if some kids got carried away, we
would use a fat stiff brush, and put the extra paint back in the bottles.
Anyway--though it was a crazy idea when I first heard it, but it really
helped me stay sane this year.
