To the question "Why Art?" or "Dont you want to teach a real class?"
I usually respond with something like, "I couldn't quite decide what
subject I wanted to teach, I love math and science and LA and history and
music and all of it so much! But then, I chose art, because in art we
teach ALL of those things, and all in another language...the universal
visual languge!"
Just to respond to some comments and questions previously posted...I too
often find it frustrating that there is little acknowledgement of my being
educated in all areas, and not just art. The feeling I often get is that
it is a lesser course, an "extra", and that we must just have a blast
everyday. Even though I display everything and write up and post
explainations of all things learned during each (often interdisciplinary)
lesson, I still get the attitude that I must be no good in math and am the
only one who knows anything about art in the school. From rediculous
assumtions to rediculous requests...it's a bit disenchanting. Many of the
teachers really reguard "the specialists" as Planning Time. I even had one
teacher say to me, "don't they schools that only teach art? Art teachers
should teach there, it would be better for everyone". But I'm working on
'em, I have a few staff meetings of time that I have requested and will be
presenting just how hard (and fun, of course)art can be, incl. the thinking
skills, and techniques, and knowledge of math, science etc... is often
needed.
