To Beth and anyone else in the New York area interested in a fabulous summer
art experience for personal and professional development. Every summer for
the last 5 years I have been going to "Camp Ashoken" in upstate New York.
This is an exhilarating week sponsored by SUNY (State University of NY) New
Palz and State Ed. It is open to all art teachers and artists.
The program, coordinated by art teachers, consists of a variety of strands
including painting, printmaking, ceramics(raku), photography, journal making,
basketry, for examples. There are usually about 75 of us for the week. We
stay in bunks (hot water and showers) and every night there is a wonderful
evening program around a campfire. At any hour you will find artists at work-
the sharing and bonding is wonderful- all the creative juices flowing. Need
to mention, the food is prepared by a renowned chef with an unbelievable
salad bar and great desserts included with every meal! You can pick and
choose what you want to do. The inspiration of the beauty in nature at this
upstate site right outside of New Palz is not to be missed.
The best part is the price- for the week around $425, including everything.
You can take this "course" titled Interdisciplinary Connections(or something
like that) for 3 in-service credits for an additional $50 or for graduate
credit by paying SUNY for a grad course. Traditionally the week has been the
first week in August, however, I think I read that it's going to be in July
this year, but I'm not sure.
