I have a classroom set of the Master Compasses...the medal kind. I bought
this set about 8 years ago. I've used them both in teaching all three grades
of middle school and professional growth courses in the evenings. They are
STILL in excellent condition. What's neat about these compasses unlike any
of the other kinds is the fact you can use not only pencils but markers,
pens, and even exacto knives with these. Before we begin the lesson, I have
kids take them apart and explain how they go together. We discuss the
"styllus" which is the metal sharp do-hickey. "Styllus" is another word I
have them say...like loud, soft, sing like an opera star, etc. and they
remember the word. I've saved one of each kind of compass I've seen and show
the kids what "not" to buy when they are shopping. I got my set from NASCO
which usually is the cheapest place I've found for these. You can get a
better deal if you buy 36 at once. It's worth it to buy a set because they
last years and years. A couple of years ago they were $1.85 each.

Tip...elementary pencils work best for this kind of pencil. The reg., thin
pencils generally break when trying to loosen these compasses.

I've been told that the Circle Master compasses with the orange plastic
center doesn't hold up well but I can attest to the medal ones.
    Toodles......
