This reminds of a dentist who saved up some old, no longer useful
steel (torture) dental tools for me to use for etching and drypoint. Be
nice to your dentists--you might find other ideas for these tools--like
carving plaster, scratchboard.

I did a unit on Scrimshaw. A local butcher was kind enough to cut a large
beef bone into small pieces. After boiling and cleaning in alum solution
the kids etched radial designs, landscapes and other motifs. The bone was
coated with ink and buffed clean. There is an Internet site with pictures
out there somewhere. A simple search might find it if you are interested.
There was a lot of teacher prep for this one, but the kids still request the
activity. I spend a lot of time on safety as I was a nutcase about the 2
sharp points.
