Before it is completely dry and brittle..is a stage called, "leather hard ".
The clay must be dried slowly to control this, either in a drying cabinet, or
draped
in plastic. The clay is still cool to the touch but is as hard as leather. It
can be carved, polished with a cloth, burnished with a tool, or incised and
drawn onto.
From this point , you can uncover and completely air-dry till the clay is no
longer cool to the touch. Now it's ready to Bisque fire at cone 5.
