The first thing I want my students to take from art class is a new
understanding of themselves as a special human being. I teach jr. high and
the majority of my students have a very low self-esteem. To me art is the
best class for fostering the "special" person. I am constantly telling my
students their opinions and thoughts are special, that is one reason they
should be themselves and not try to copy someone else.
Of course, I hope my students learn to apply the elements and principles of
art not only in the art work they create in my class, or when they are
dressing each morning, but also in the future when they are decorating their
homes.
