Kids can find fire and tornado drill frightening also. If you deal with the
secure campus drill calmly, you might calm the fears of your students. Try
to communicate that you are working to make them safe, and you do not think
something is going to happen today. In my Junior High School teachers were
required to keep their doors locked at all times (you could open them from
the inside). The reason a parent had shown up with a knife to kidnap the
child they had lost custody of. I do not have the statistics in front of me,
but school violence has actually declined in the last 5 years. Kids are
safer in school than almost anywhere else in the United States. You might
find those statistics and share them with your kids if they are old enough
to understand. Above all make sure the kids do not accidentally overhear
teachers discussing their own fears.

I'm curious to find out if any of you are experiencing this at your school.
Monday we are to have our FIRST "secure campus" drill. This is in case
someone comes on campus with a weapon, etc. and we have to secure our
classroom with children. We're supposed to pull all of the students away
from windows, sit on the floor far from same, I'm supposed to close drapes,
run outside my door to lock it...dumb idea getting doors that lock from the
outside only (...but, hey, that's district planning...what can I say?), then
run back inside and call the office to report on the kids I have with me at
the time. They will also send out pre-selected students to see if we find
them outside near our doorways and we must pull them inside too. This is
going to be interesting.
Do any of you have school drills like this? If so, how long have you been
doing them? I really curious. Toodles...........
