In 1989 our elementary school came up with a code for "lock down" called "Code
Blue." We anticipated things like custody disputes, etc. About a week later
a Code Blue was announced and we all thought it was a drill. However, in the
cafeteria it was no drill. A custodian shot another custodian from across the
cafeteria that was filled with first graders. The victim died immediately and
the shooter ran out, but not before holding a gun to the head of an aide and
shooting into a playground full of children. No one else was physically
injured. I, personally, began suffering from panic attacks for a while after
it was all over, and a number of the teachers had similar responses. Anyway,
I take all of our drill plans very, very seriously now.
