What do you want your students to know and learn in art? ( Nancy Walkupīs
    question)

What do I want my students to learn when they paint a picture, build forms
in soft clay or draw a picture of a house?

John Dewey said (65 yrs ago): art is a certain kind of experience that has
a special kind of value and as such it makes our lives richer.
I want my students to learn this, I also want them to learn the language of
art, that is how to use colours, forms etc. because they must know
techniques and develope capacity to express their ideas through art ( as
you cannot express yourself in a language you donīt know).
I want my students to learn and know about the arts as a power that can
create life in what is special. What we may find mundane may be an
inspiration for an artist, their expression often shows us what we have
stopped noticing thus giving us new value in our everyday experience and
"seing" what we did not see before. Art can depict the horror of war in a
way the news in our living room no longer can.
I want my students to find in their art a channel(path) where they can
express themselves in their own way so that their art comes from
themselves, is real. That they can choose their colours with insight and
that their lines be filled with sound, some kind of music. I want them to
learn that by painting a picture their works can bring them into a world of
imagination and dreams. That by creating art they can more easily
participate in the magic moments of the mind and wake up ideas and
emotions hidden in the deep corners of their souls.
Or as Elliot Eisner says: "Art education should contribute to education
what other fields cannot contribute". I want that for my students.
Best regards from the far north,
    Rosa
