Bunki,
We are also dealing with the procedure to lock down and secure the entire
building. We call it a "Code Red" and we are in the beginning stages of
discussing how it will work, how we will talk to students about it and how
we will practice it. It is very similar to your procedure, although we are
not supposed to use the phone unless we have seen the "shooter" or the
suspect; otherwise the phone lines could become inoperable with too many
people using them. We had a scare a couple of months ago when someone heard
a shot close to the school. The office announced our code word ( the kids
didn't know anything then) and we turned off lights, closed shades, locked
doors etc. I was really frightened. It was such an eerie thing. Turned
out to be a hunter in the woods across the street. I am not looking forward
to these drills or discussing this with students, but sadly, it is something
that must be addressed.
