You must realize that Mapplethorp and Michaelangelo are on opposite ends of
the nudity issue.
Mapplethorp is easily recognizable as a deviant, with obvious sexual
overtones to his work.
Michaelangelo wasn't pious ,yet he displayed pure spiritual beauty in the
human form without a focus on sexual content. When a work of art is spiritual
it transcends any sexual issue, because it elevates the thoughts beyond the
physical form to the highest form of created beauty.
I won't argue each ones validity, but they are not on the same plane.
