I am REALLY glad that this discussion on this list. Whether it is soley
about art or not is irrelevent. It's about teaching and education, and as
art TEACHERS we fall into this category and should not...cannot ignore the
presence of GLB youth in our schools. Each teacher will choose how to deal
with them. No matter what they will be "treated" somehow. Sometimes with
compassion and support from certain teachers, some with a GLBT support
group, and many times with an unconstitutional lack of fair education from
faculty and staff. It's one thing for individuals to treat people with
disrespect, like a teacher to a student. But often with this issue it is a
whole school, an entire community that persecutes a student. I don't think
this is a moral issue....every student should get an education...how can a
child learn if they are being abused? This is a MORAL issue?!
It seems like a primarily religious, and culturally brainwashed issue to
me. It confuses me that there seems to be little separation of church and
state in a country founded on the concept! I have the upmost respect for
any religion that respects human kind. Judgement based on a woman loving a
woman, or a man loving a man is ludicrous! It is not a sexual thing! It's
not dirty! It is a love, respect, and intellectual thing above all. So
how is this a MORAL issue?
Anyway, I really was just going to say that Im glad this discussion is
on the list because it is pertinent to art teachers, they do see more of
these students than most, the art room is often a safe haven where they can
be comfortable, and succeed. I think it's great that this discussion is
happening merely because it makes people think about the issue...even
though we don't all agree. I can respect that.
And I think it's great that we can all share our thoughts in a respectful,
professional forum, gaining at the least the perspectives of others and
acknowledging this as a contemporary issue.
