I always try to give the direction several times before they start, in a
demo and then again right as they get their paper. After that, I don't
tell them again. I say "find someone who was listening" or "ask your
table-mates." It has greatly cut down on my frustration level.
Occasionally, I find myself actually answering them and after a few
repeats, I get really flustered. So they are used to asking someone
else, and the kids who do listen carefully also get tired of having to
repeat, repeat, repeat. Oh, I teach K-6, so if you start them young,
maybe they will grow to be more careful listeners.
