I am alarmed that so many of these kids have no idea how to measure,
and we wonder why our scores are so low. Of course the tests are set
up for one kind of intelligence and doesn't allow for other multiple
intelligence's, but even so everyone should be able to use a tool
and figure out measurements. Isn't there a National standard that
teachers have to abide by. How about setting up parent or elderly
volunteers to overhaul our schools and tutor or mentor a few
students at a time. They aren't doing anything but dying slowly
anyway in nursing homes or in their own home. Why not make their and
our lives more productive. We have an increasing elderly population,
which will only get larger with us, why don't we set up the schools
more like a "Village environment", (as in Reggio emilia) and put
kids, (with working parents and absent parents and grandparents who
live far away) with the elderly in our community. Why do we cast
them away? Would you want to be? I am appalled by the comments
    below.

    > > In my school I have sixth graders w/no idea how to use a ruler.Pat
    > Many of my HS students can't measure either,Maggie
    >I have been student teaching High School and I was surprised to see how many
did not know how to do this. Janice
    > i too have found (even with seventh and eighth
    > grade) MANY students cannot apply their knowledge of using a ruler.(forgot who)

What about a child getting an education that we are all paying for
and getting our money's worth! I pay twice, since I pay taxes and
send my kids to parochial school, but I volunteer at school and help
with reading, art and testing and I also substitute, I know I should
    do more.
Geez we need a great organizer who knows international diplomacy and
foreign policies and Military experience.( because we need the
respect form other countries who are governed in a more political
society and can respect a military person, or one with knowledge who
can speak with authority and know what they are talking about.) We
also need someone to completely overhaul the schools and introduce
European and Asian teaching methods as well as thin books but the
context is really taught and understood.
