>how to teach using a ruler??
I start teaching my third graders how to "read" a ruler by taking
the type we use in the art room and making copies of them (about 3 per page
each student) on the copy machine. Then we spend time finding whole
inches--including 0 on the left end--, then half inches, quarter inches,
eighth inches and sixteenth inches. We color each division in a separate
color of colored pencil..ie. red for whole inches, blue for half inches,
etc. You can use the extra ruler images for practice. In the following
lesson we learn about vertical and horizontal, parallel and perpendicular.
I give them an 8 1/2 x ll sheet of paper and we practice using a ruler and
making dot marks with the ruler parallel to the top and bottom of the paper
and then turning the ruler perpendicular to the top and bottom, drawing a
line from top to bottom, connecting the measuring dots. We do this several
times. using different inch and fraction combinations in all formats (v and
h). The application lesson is an exact size grid copy of a politcal
cartoon which I collect from the editorial page and make copies for the
students to choose. They may choose to change the text and add color to
their freehand copy. We measure the cartoon into equal sections then
measure and trim the copy paper to the same size, then measure/draw for
grid blocks, which are numbered in both. The students really love this
lesson and they are learning a useful skill in the process. However, it
would not be possible if I didn't take time for the preliminary steps.
