at the risk of sounding like a complete fool..... is there anyone who knows
how to teach using a ruler?? i too have found (even with seventh and eighth
grade) MANY students cannot apply their knowledge of using a ruler. i'd
    love
to have a class teaching how to use a ruler but i'm not sure i know how. do
i have to teach the fractions too? how do i begin?

Write them up the first time they use it for something other than what it is
intended for such as a sword, knife, bat or hammer. My highschoolers did it
right off the bat. I have 6 classes and had to get on to someone in every
period. We were using rulers, yard sticks and straightedges. Some were
plastic, wood or metal. We had some near misses.
