Why not let them go with the idea? Instead of showing them how you want it
done- let them do it their way... Like give them a couple scraps of paper,
glue, scissors and some tounge-depressors and tell them to go at it-- Or
even better- have them create a "Found object" peice- Give them project they
think they can 'slack off' in doing(but what they will really be doing is
relaxing and focusing on the peice and the solution rather than the
definitions of the peice)- and then when they come back to class- have a
critque- ask them which designs work best- which colors catch the eye, what
projects they like and what they don't like and why- You'll get them to use
vocabulary and the possibilities for this project are endless- It's the
fundamental's of sculpture - and don't feel guilty about it- You'll be
tricking them into learning with something that they can have fun with. As
an added plus , you'll be preparing for college- where they will have to
supply thier own solutions to various problems in art. I think the reason
why so many young people don't like art is becuase they are forced to do it
the way the teacher/professor wants it done- and that is unfortunate-
becuase they don't get to create by themselves. They don't get to express
what they want , and how they want, without worrying about whether the
perspective lines up or not- Besides, Piccasso's perspective almost never
lined up....
Just a sugesstion.
