It's too bad you have no idea what you're talking about. If all Americans had
equal rights under the law, nobody would have to ask permission from the state to
marry whomever they choose. The constitution SAYS we all have the right to life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but the reality is that certain groups of
people have always been denied those rights. Example: Women treated as lower
class citizens and paid less than men in general, blacks and other minorities
treated as lower class citizens and paid less than whites, and fired from jobs
because of bigotry against their skin color, homosexual people denied the right
to marry whom they choose, fired from jobs regardless of their performance
because of bigotry against them. Equal pay, job security, the right to
marry....these aren't "special rights", they are the rights guaranteed by the
constitution, but denied to many because of discrimination. How'd you like it if
the government said you couldn't marry whomever YOU liked because that person is
a minority of some sort?
The Vermont ruling did not offer any rights to homosexual people that straight
people don't already have in spades. It merely puts an end to the discrimination
by the state.
