    I tend to agree that in the middle school level some won't listen the first
    time since they know you repeat it again. Day one I tell them in order for
    me to give them more work time, I will explain the process once. I too write
    the directions on the board and demonstrate with eye focus. If they ask me
    a question, I repeat the question back to them. 9 out of 10 times they say,
    "oh ya" and can answer it themselves. If several ask the same question I
    will call attention to the class and repeat it in the event that I was not
    clear. Since this new strategy I have heard my name called less often.
