I would like to think that I take interest in my students' lives. I try
to go to games that my students are playing in. (Many students' parents
don't even show for the children's basketball games.) I sit and talk with my
students. My door is always open. Sometimes I come home late because I was
with a student who just needed to talk. I have come close to giving out my
phone number - the student's mom was in the hospital (long story). But I
always try to keep a line of professionalism. I may be their own friend in
the world, but I am still their teacher. How can we teach students if we
don't even know who they are?
