Yes, I have 2 lessons with colored pencils.
1. The student gets a finder (a circle cut from a piece of cheap paper) in 2
or 3 sizes. After a discussion of the elements and principles of design,
they look for the principles of design in the finder. By looking at
pictures and seeing the areas of interest, balance (formal or informal),
rhythm, variety of size, directional movement, etc. they find a composition.
Enlarge (with a grid or freehand) and with many layers of colored pencils and
using white to blend, and with keeping a small amount of the grain of the
paper, they create a large drawing that is Nonobjective, but very interesting
in color and design. Good for enforcing the Principles of design.
2. The Other project is a drawing of flowers close up like the work of
Georgia O"Keefe. they are given examples of her work and by using real
flowers in class they use contour line to get a composition and then crop it
down to the center of the flower. Enlarge this with a grid or redraw
freehand and use the colored pencils to keep layers of color and blending of
values. Big is good here.
