To the Mom of mister resistant,
I was a parent who worried over what I considered strange behaviors in my
little ones.
One of my sons went through a hand washing phase that convinced me he was
obsessive compulsive or that I had made him germ phobic. It passed all by
itself. Another ran out the door of his preschool and chased me into the
parking lot every M,W, and F afternoon for three weeks-- it passed. He was
the same one who was so stubborn that everything you wanted him to do became
a power struggle. It became a positive persistence. (This took a little
longer--like till he grew up!)
I was so lucky to be able to call my mom when I was worried or frustrated
with child behaviors. I might have had a degree in Education, and experience
with other peoples' kids, but she had MotherWit. Her advice? Very little is
permanent at this age.
Watch it, wait it out. And just as I was ready to call in a child
psychologist--the behavior dissolved.
I'm not saying you can ignore serious or scary behaviors, but most of the
time, these "abberations" are momentary side trips. If you suspect a
learning disability, you might have him tested, but usually there are other
indicators. (By the way, my kids grew up into healthy, good people, despite
their early weirdness.)
Try not to worry.
