    I have done a collage with 5th graders and it has a very high sucess
    rate. I give everyone a background page from National Geographic that is
    a full page photo of a distant background space..they then glue that
    onto a stiffer piece of paper. They have to find foreground and mid
    ground objects to put in. I call it Visual Humor as they love to make
    fun "jumpcut" combinations like RBeardon. I tell them to follow an idea
    if they get one, but that art as humor is just as good a reason to
    create. There is a good video on R B available through several
    sources...like crystal.
