There is a children's book of poems called:
The Block : Poems by Langston Hughes, Illustrated by Romare Bearden
ISBN: 067086501X
The illustrations are collages of the city neighborhoods that are the subject
of the poetry. It is a great book.
I just tried collages based on Bearden's work with my 6th and 7th graders. It
was semi-successful. It was very difficult for many of them to create a
scene or picture, instead of just a collection of magazine pictures, which is
what I tried to emphasize. The most successful created people from different
parts of pictures and different kinds of paper and made a scene for the
people to fit into. We used the Scholastic Art issue about him from a couple
of years ago (sorry, I don't have the date with me.) I didn't have The Block
available, but I think it would have helped. It was harder than I expected it
to be, for my example too. I used their neighborhood and things they like as
subjects. We had looked at some examples that revolved around jazz musicians,
that was the tie in for things they liked. Then I realized that most of our
magazines were National Geographics, which had more exotic pictures than
their neighborhoods, so the pictures took on a fantasy aspect.
Good luck,
Heather
