My semester exams are tough. I divide the exam into three sections. 1)
Vocabulary, procedures, history, etc. These are usually fill in the blank.
2) Written critique over a reproduction that I hang at the front of the
room. This is in the formal critique form. 3) Drawing of a still life. I let
the kids know this will be weighted depending on the time they spend on it.
They write the time down when they begin drawing and have until the end of
class. We are in blocks, so the kids have 1 1/2 hours to work. All teachers
must turn in a copy of their final exam to the administrator, so not only
can I see how well the kids learned, but the administrator can see that I
expect as much from the students as the science teacher.
