Title: Warm Winter Quilts
Description: This project is focused on the theme of quilts and came
as a result of reading the story 3The Quiltmaker1s Gift2 which is a
wonderful story about the value of being generous. Participating classes
will read stories centered around the theme of quilts. Many quilts have
story to tell. Therefore, each student in the class will create their
paper quilt square and will write to tell about the particular design,
shapes or pictures that they used when creating their square. The class
will create a quilt from these squares, take a picture of the class
and send it to the project coordinator along with the student writing.
Pictures can be taken with a digital camera or taken with a regular
and sent to the project coordinator to be scanned. Student writing can
sent via e-mail. All student work will be presented on the following web
site which is currently under construction:
Dates of Project: January 3-February 18, 2000 All materials to be
sent to the project coordinator no later than Feb.18. The materials will
on the web site by February 25, 2000.
Number of Participants: 25 classes in grade 2
Subjects: This project addresses skills in Language Arts, Social
and Technology. The following New York State Standards are addressed:
English Language Arts Standards
Standard 1: Students will listen, speak, read, and write for infomration
Standard 2: Students will listen, speak, read, and write for literary
response and expression.
Standard 3: Students will listen, speak, read, and write for critical
analysis and evaluation.
Standard 4: Students will listen, speak, read, and write for social
Math, Science, Technology Standards
Standard 2 - Information Systems
Students will access, generate, process and transfer infomration using
Social Studies Standards
Standard 3: Geography
Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their
understanding of the geography of the interdependent world in which we
- local, national, and global - including the distribution of people,
places, andenvironments over the Earth1s surface.
