I think that tracing has a big place in the educational process. The idea
of tracing someone else's work and then calling it our own has made
tracing have a bad name, but I find all kinds of
uses for it. I have kids trace over their own work and rub pencil on the
back to reproduce it on another page for an alternate treatment. I have
kids trace each other with markers through glass--especially things like
ears and noses. I have them trace over good value photos so that they can
SEE the shadows--that is really hard for them. I find that many kids who
don't seem to "get" drawing can see it if they trace the lines--they can't
figure out how to make the change from real life to flat paper.
Don't be inflexible--teach them all kinds of ways and if the approved ways
don't work--go with what does--give them a good feeling about art--let
them enjoy it.
