Tracing

Here's another opinion on tracing. I believe students should be taught that
there is a time to trace, and a time to draw. If someone wants an exact copy
of an image, there is no reason not to trace it in there. After all, art is
communication. If a traced image is the best one to use and will get the
message across the most fluently, then it's right.

We in America tend to put too much emphasis on how much time and effort went
into a work of art. It takes a lot of time and effort to learn to draw well,
but that doesn't mean every work of art should be labored over to be "good".

But I do think it is very important to point out that their own drawings are
usually more interesting than an exact tracing, because every drawing has a
little bit of the artist's viewpoint in it, and perfect art isn't necessarily
better art. I think we tend to get too hung up on "getting it right."

To teach students to draw, of course, make 'em draw. If a student is trying
to express an idea, and is wanting to trace, ask her if a tracing or a
drawing would be best. Or at least point out that the two types of images are
not the same. Sometimes that photographic likeness is too stiff and stuffy,
and sometimes it's exactly right.
