Hi...I love to tie dye with my kids!
The best dye comes from Dharma Trading Co. (dharmatrading.com). I use the
Fiber Reactive Procion mx Dyes for Cotton.
Shirts need to be washed first without fabric softener. 100% cotton will give
you deeper colors.
Soak shirts in a mixture (1 cup to every gallon) of soda ash and water for 5
minutes. Wring out extra water and tie up with rubber bands. (Anyone touching
the the shirts will need rubber gloves because of the soda ash).
Tie up with rubber bands and apply the dye using squeeze bottles. Each
student will be able to have several colors on their shirt by using this
method. Shirt go into a plastic bag and goes home. After 24 hours, the shirt
can be washed out under running warm water first to get all extra dry out and
than into the wash, alone, with some DAWN.

Have done this with as young as 2nd, but feel like to is better for the older
students. One note on safety, the soda ash water can go into eyes when
putting on the rubber bands, wear "glasses" and/or make sure the shirts are
wrung out VERY WELL.
Have fun!!! My kids love Tie Dye Day at school.
