I have done an invention lesson- a few years ago and with
kindergarten & 1st grade. This was a way to compensate for them not
being apart of the science fair. I did it during Our science fair
and it was exhibited with the other classes in their own room. I'll
post the contract but if you want the details on "ideas to get you
started", that I sent home, email me privately and I'll send them.

the contract was due on January 12th and projects were due January
29.
I sent both sheets home after the New Year. you can upgrade to fit
age appropriate criteria.
They went over Thomas Edison and some other modern inventors with me
and their homeroom teacher.
Oh, I gave everyone a blue ribbon too.
