Stained or "painted glass" in medieval cathedrals is a similar process, colored undercoats and applying black and removing black to reveal the design, realistic or abstract. Under colors can follow a pattern or be spontaneous. If following a plan remember to mark rear matching corners to re-align your pattern.

Dear Colleagues,

I'm planning to soon do a scratchboard project with my fifth grade students.
Does anyone have some ideas of a good art history lesson to go with this?
I'd just like a starting point for my research.

Thank you, Leah
