I do a unit with Matisse, expressionism, and bring in complimentary colors.
I have the students (4th graders) make self portraits on black (with white
charcoal pencils). then we discuss colors as expressions of emotions. We
then talk about complimentary colors, look in magazines to see how
advertizing has used that concept to bring colors out. Then I have them
color their portraits with the complimentary color concept in mind. I also
let then go "crazy" with hair design and colors......split faces etc. The
"real" kid really comes out!!!!they love it and it is also an incite to what
some of them are really feeling about themselves!
