I wanted to give you another idea to teach about the museum. My 6th
graders create a student museum. To start I collect art from my K-6
students. Next I teach students about museum careers such as the docent,
conservator, public relation specialists and even the guards.
Then each student chooses a career they think they would be interested in .
They read about the jobs in detail and are given an index card with their
school museum responsibilities. The next day students have 10 minutes to set
up and review thier jobs. When it was time they went to thier spot and got
ready. It was great, the teachers and administration came down and asked
the students questions about the art and about the different careers. The
students were a little nervous at first but after they answered a question
they were more confident. The staff was impressed with the way the classes
were so serious about the project. They took their jobs to heart and they
talked about it for the rest of the year.
