I know that many of us have differing opinions re: grading art education. I
prefer not to give grades. My desire is to encourage students to express
themselves creatively, and I am constantly reminding them that the only way
they can fail is not to try. Many of these students who still refuse to try
are experiencing some emotional distress...which can have a myriad of
causes/sources, ranging from parental disapproval to drugs...or even
psychological problems. Much of this is out of the hands of a single teacher,
and all you can do is support them as much as is possible. For these students
in particular, the last thing they need is a grade on their creativity.
