I left an alternative center for seriously emotionally disturbed
kids after 12 years, and I had some pangs of guilt. I had to remind
myself that I had paid my dues. There comes a time when you hand it to
someone a little younger, a little more energetic. My days of chasing
kids through the woods, with my walkie talkie in one hand, and surgical
gloves in the other, wore
me out. (Not exactly what I had in mind as an Art Ed student.)
When I took my present job seven years ago, I realized that there are
kids who need special help and understanding everywhere. The special
centers only have a few of the troubled, needy students and those kids
will find you wherever you go.
If you decide to go elsewhere, leave your guilt behind. Twenty years
is more than your share.
